How Much Is 15 Minutes of Work Worth? (Hourly Pay Conversion Tables 2026)
📑 In this guide
The math behind the question
If you earn an hourly wage, every 15 minutes is worth $X — and the number is more useful than it looks. It reframes a “small chunk of time” into the language employers and freelancers use: dollars per minute. Once you know your per-minute number, decisions about meetings, errands, side work, and freelance quotes become much easier.
The formula is simple:
Per-minute value = Hourly wage ÷ 60
So at $20 per hour, each minute is worth $0.333. Multiply by the minutes you spend:
| Duration | $15/hr | $20/hr | $25/hr | $30/hr | $40/hr | $50/hr |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 minutes | $3.75 | $5.00 | $6.25 | $7.50 | $10.00 | $12.50 |
| 30 minutes | $7.50 | $10.00 | $12.50 | $15.00 | $20.00 | $25.00 |
| 45 minutes | $11.25 | $15.00 | $18.75 | $22.50 | $30.00 | $37.50 |
| 1 hour | $15.00 | $20.00 | $25.00 | $30.00 | $40.00 | $50.00 |
| 4 hours (half day) | $60.00 | $80.00 | $100.00 | $120.00 | $160.00 | $200.00 |
| 8 hours (full day) | $120.00 | $160.00 | $200.00 | $240.00 | $320.00 | $400.00 |
For salaried workers, divide your annual salary by 2,080 (the FLSA standard work year of 40 hours × 52 weeks). A $60,000 salary is roughly $28.85/hour; a 15-minute meeting is about $7.21 in labor cost. A $90,000 salary is $43.27/hour; the same 15 minutes is $10.82.
Three things the per-minute number changes
1. Meeting decisions. A weekly standup that runs 30 minutes past the agenda is costing $10-$25 of your hourly rate (and double that in fully-loaded company cost). Knowing the number makes “can this be an email?” a much easier question to ask.
2. Side errands. Driving 30 minutes to save $5 on a purchase is a net loss once you include the value of the time and the gas. Per-minute value is the test.
3. Freelance and side-hustle quotes. When a client offers $200 for a 4-hour project, your hourly is $50 — well above your day job. When the offer is $50 for 4 hours, your hourly is $12.50 — well below. Many people accept the second because they only compare the headline number, not the implied hourly rate. The per-minute number makes the comparison instant.
How this connects to overtime
For hourly workers who also work overtime, the per-minute number has a second setting. Federal overtime is 1.5x the regular rate (29 CFR 778.108); California daily overtime kicks in past 8 hours in a day at 1.5x and past 12 hours at 2x. At $20/hr regular rate, your overtime minutes are worth $0.50 instead of $0.333. Salary conversion formula
If you know your salary and want the per-minute number:
Per-minute value = Salary ÷ 2,080 hours ÷ 60 minutes
Examples:
- $40,000 salary → $19.23/hr → $0.320/min → $4.81 per 15 minutes
- $60,000 salary → $28.85/hr → $0.481/min → $7.21 per 15 minutes
- $90,000 salary → $43.27/hr → $0.721/min → $10.82 per 15 minutes
For 2026, the federal minimum wage is $7.25/hour (about $0.121 per minute); the highest state minimum wage in 2026 is around $16.66/hour in Washington State (about $0.278 per minute). Many state minimum wages are indexed to inflation and rise each year — confirm with your state’s labor department for the current number.
Frequently asked questions
What about commute time? Commute time is generally not counted as hours worked under the FLSA (29 CFR 785.36), so the dollar value is real to you but does not change your employer’s wage calculation. Normal home-to-work travel is unpaid; only work-site-to-work-site travel during the workday counts.
Does a coffee break count? Unpaid breaks (typically 30 minutes) are not hours worked. Paid rest breaks of 20 minutes or less (per state law) are hours worked but do not change the rate — your per-minute value still applies.
What if I freelance in addition to a salary? Freelance quotes should use the same per-minute math but with a premium built in for self-employment taxes (15.3% FICA + income tax) and the lack of benefits. A common freelance hourly rate is 2× to 3× your day-job hourly, which keeps take-home comparable after those costs.
