How this calculation works
Overnight shifts that cross midnight require special handling: if the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift wraps into the next day. This calculator automatically adds 24 hours in that case.
Federal law does not require a night-shift pay premium, though many employers offer one. The 40-hour weekly overtime threshold still applies regardless of when shifts occur.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are overnight shifts calculated?
When clock-out is earlier than clock-in (e.g., 22:00 start, 06:00 end), the calculator treats the shift as crossing midnight and adds 24 hours to the end time before computing worked hours.
Is night shift premium required by federal law?
No. The FLSA does not require a night-shift differential. Shift premiums are set by employer policy, union contract, or certain state/local rules.
